Privacy Policy
In short. To translate, Bibasi sends what both people say, and the text or pictures you point the camera at, to third-party AI services: speech recognition, translation and voice models. They turn it into text, translate it and speak the translation. We do not record or keep your conversations, pictures or their text on our servers. Your history stays on your phone. We keep only an anonymous purchase ID and how much you use, to run your subscription. No ads, no tracking, no selling of data.
Who we are
Bibasi is made and published by MD Sabel Ahmad Tanjil, known as Tanjil Ahmad, the owner of Metly Media, in Bangladesh, who is responsible for the information this policy describes. Write to tanjil@metlymedia.com about anything in it.
What happens to your voice
While a conversation is running, the app sends the sound from your phone’s microphone, which includes your voice and the voice of the person you are talking to, directly from your phone to a third-party speech recognition service, which turns it into text. That text goes through our server to a language model, which translates it, and to a voice model, which speaks the translation. Our server passes the text on without recording or storing it. The microphone is used only while a conversation is running.
What happens to what the camera sees
The camera is used only after you tap Take a photo in the Look tab, or Scan a price in the Convert tab, and only what is inside the box on the screen is read. Nothing is sent until you tap the button: then a picture of what is inside the box is sent through our server to a third-party AI model, which reads and translates the text in it. Pictures and text are passed on without being stored by us. If a picture shows people, their faces go with it, so point the camera at the text you want translated. The app never reads your photo library; it adds a picture to it only when you tap Save to Photos.
The services that process your conversation
Bibasi uses carefully chosen third-party AI providers for:
-
Speech recognition: a service that turns speech into text.
-
Translation: a language model that translates each sentence, with up to the last ten exchanges of the conversation for context so short replies make sense.
-
Voice: text-to-speech models that speak the translation.
-
Reading pictures: an AI model that reads and translates the text in pictures from the Look and Convert tabs.
Under their terms for paid business use, these providers do not use what we send them to train or improve their models. Some keep it for a limited time, at most 55 days, only to detect abuse or misuse, unless the law requires longer; others do not store it at all. They may process it in the United States, the European Union or other countries where they operate.
Before your first conversation or scan the app asks for your permission to send speech, text and pictures to these third-party AI services. Nothing is sent without it. To withdraw it, stop using the app and delete it, or write to us and we will delete the usage records kept under your anonymous ID.
Exchange rates
The Convert tab and the prices shown in other money use daily reference exchange rates from a public rates service, fetched by our server. Asking for rates sends nothing about you beyond the anonymous ID above. Rates are indicative, not the rate a bank or exchange office will give you.
What we keep on our servers
-
An anonymous ID created by our subscription provider the first time you open the app. It is not your name, email or Apple ID.
-
Whether your subscription is active, checked with that provider.
-
How much you use each day (seconds of conversation, lines translated and spoken, camera pictures), so that the fair-use limits work. Only the counts are kept, never the words or pictures.
Everything we keep under your anonymous ID is deleted 60 days after you last use the app, or sooner if you ask us.
Our server runs with a cloud hosting provider. Like any web service it keeps short technical logs, which contain no audio, no pictures and no conversation text.
Why we use this information
The anonymous ID, your subscription status and the counts are needed to provide the service you subscribed to. What both people say, and the pictures you take, are sent to the AI services only to translate them, with the permission you give in the app before your first conversation or scan.
Purchases
Apple handles payment; we never see your card details. Our subscription provider records which subscription you have so the app can unlock it, using the anonymous ID above. To check purchases and prevent fraud it also receives technical details of your phone, such as a device identifier, the app version and your IP address.
What stays on your phone
Your history (the words both of you said and their translations, the pictures you took in Look with what was read in them, and the prices you converted) and the audio of each spoken translation are stored only on your phone, and in your phone’s own backup if you use iCloud or computer backups, until you delete them in History. A diagnostics log of what the app did, without the content of conversations, also stays on the phone unless you choose to share it with us.
The other person
Please tell the person you are talking to that the conversation is being translated by AI services.
Children
Bibasi is not directed to children under 13.
Your choices and rights
-
Withdraw your permission by deleting the app; nothing more is sent from it.
-
Delete any conversation or scan, or all of them, in History.
-
Turn off the camera for Bibasi in your iPhone’s Settings; Look and price scans then stop working, and nothing else changes.
-
Ask us what we keep under your anonymous ID, or ask us to delete it, by writing to the address below. Your anonymous ID is on the About page in Bibasi; copy it into your email so we can find your records.
-
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the data-protection authority where you live.
