ViewRank ("we", "our", or "the extension") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Chrome extension.

TL;DR: ViewRank operates entirely in your browser. We don't collect, store, or transmit any personal data to external servers. All data processing happens locally on your device.

Information We Access

Instagram Data

When you use ViewRank on Instagram, the extension accesses the following data directly from Instagram's public API to provide ranking functionality:

  • Reel metadata: View counts, like counts, comment counts, reel codes/IDs, usernames, thumbnail URLs

  • Additional metadata (on-demand): Post dates, captions, video lengths

  • Profile information: Only for the profile you're currently viewing on Instagram

Local Browser Storage

ViewRank stores the following data locally in your browser using Chrome's storage.local API:

  • User preferences: Your selected sorting criteria (views/likes/comments), count selections (50/100/200/etc.), and export format preferences

  • Cached data: Temporarily cached reel metadata to improve performance and reduce API calls to Instagram

  • Starred/favorited reels: Reel IDs you've marked as favorites

How We Use Information

All data accessed by ViewRank is used exclusively for the following purposes:

  • Sorting and ranking: To organize Instagram reels by your selected performance metrics

  • Display enhancement: To show additional information like post dates, captions, and video statistics

  • Export functionality: To generate spreadsheet or list format exports of your top-performing content

  • Preference management: To remember your settings for future sessions

Important: All processing happens entirely within your browser. ViewRank does not send any data to external servers, third-party services, or analytics platforms.

Data Storage and Retention

Local Storage Only

All data is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage APIs. This data:

  • Remains on your device and is never transmitted to our servers

  • Is automatically cleared when you clear your browser's extension data

  • Can be manually cleared by removing starred videos or uninstalling the extension

Cache Management

Cached reel metadata is stored temporarily to improve performance. The extension implements smart caching with rate limiting (150ms delays between API calls) to respect Instagram's services.

Third-Party Services

Instagram/Meta

ViewRank interacts directly with Instagram's platform to access publicly available reel data. When you use ViewRank:

  • API requests are made directly from your browser to Instagram's servers

  • You remain subject to Instagram's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

  • ViewRank does not authenticate with Instagram or access private account information

  • All data accessed is already visible to you through Instagram's normal interface

No External Analytics

ViewRank does not use Google Analytics, tracking pixels, or any third-party analytics services. We do not collect usage statistics, crash reports, or telemetry data.

Permissions Explained

ViewRank requires the following Chrome permissions to function:

activeTab: Used to access the current Instagram tab in order to validate and interact with the page.

tabs: Used to query the active tab URL for validation, limited to the Reels tab only.

scripting: Allows injecting content scripts to display a ranking overlay on Instagram.

storage: Used to save user preferences, cached data, and starred videos locally.

Your Data Rights

Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control:

Access Your Data

You can view all locally stored data by:

  1. Opening Chrome DevTools (F12)

  2. Going to Application → Storage → Extension Storage

  3. Selecting the ViewRank extension

Delete Your Data

You can delete all ViewRank data by:

  • Clear starred videos: Click "Clear Stars" button in the extension

  • Clear all data: Go to Chrome Settings → Extensions → ViewRank → Remove extension data

  • Complete removal: Uninstall the extension from Chrome

Export Your Data

Use ViewRank's built-in export feature to save your ranked reels data in Sheets or List format, which you control entirely.

Children's Privacy

ViewRank is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has used our extension, please contact us.

Changes to Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy periodically. Material changes will be communicated through:

  • Extension update notes in the Chrome Web Store

  • Updated "Last Modified" date at the top of this policy

Continued use of ViewRank after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

Security

Since ViewRank operates entirely locally without external data transmission, your data security depends on:

  • Chrome's built-in security for extension storage

  • Your device's security settings

  • Instagram's security measures for their API

We recommend keeping your browser and operating system up to date for optimal security.

Legal Compliance

This Privacy Policy complies with:

  • Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies

  • General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) principles

  • California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) requirements

Since we don't collect personal data, most data protection regulations don't apply, but we've structured this policy to be transparent about our minimal data practices.
